Although retroviruses appear to be ancient, and are found occassionaly endogenised in the germ  lines of such ancient lineages as reptiles, they are only found in very large numbers in the germ lines of the endothermic mammals (not monotremes), marsupials, and birds. Is there some significance to this correlation between endothermy and the endogenisation of retroviruses, or is it perhaps just a meaningless coincidence, with no evolutionary significance?
