As we know coal has different qualities, so is it necessary that they would have the same adsorption capacity (particularly of methane). I think they are not but not sure!
The second problem is that if we calculate the pores volume of any coal type through petrography, can it be an actual analogue for the coal bed methane present there, which is normally find via other methods.

in Western Canada different qualities of coal from metallurgical to anthracite have different adsorption capacities. This comes from their current industrial uses. In order to get max. btu efficiency certain coals have different release rates of heat. IE Anthracite long term.... bituminous generally faster. Adsoption depends directly on the current biochem. makeup of the coal. So at least in Canada bit.coals generally have highest CH4. Anthracites have lesser amounts.

The absorption capacities of the coal depend on mainly quality of Coal so it is not necessary that all coal must have same absorption capacity....The part is the visual estimation of the CBM, so if you know the saturation percentage then it can be done by Petrography.....Gas Chromatography can be helpful...
This is actually a question that cannot get answered easily or straight forward: Coal is a very heterogeneous material in terms of composition, chemistry and pore size distribution to start with and it underlies a burial history with temperature changes that can heavily affect the sorption characteristics. There is plenty of published material on this.
Basically, low rank coal sorbs quite significantly and so does high rank coal. Bituminous coal sorbs way less simply because when coal reaches oil maturation, the micropores are filled with oil droplets and are therefore not accessible to gas. Well your question is a very basic question and many a times many researcher overlook this point. Let me tell you that the coal that has been mined is not pure coal. Now you will ask why it is so. The coal that has been mined has got similar material at different stages of formation (petrification). Though the literature might say that there 4 stages of petrifiaction, these stages are not separated by distinct boundaries. Therefore, the so called coal will show different adsorption capacity for methane and carbon dioxide along with many other gasses like hydrogen sulfide, phosphorous pentaoxide, etc.
