Two regimes of swelling are generally considered in clay minerals (and smectites in particular): crystalline swelling and osmotic swelling.
While osmotic swelling is generally associated with the diffuse double layer, I am wondering whether crystalline swelling could be associated with the development Stern layers.

From what I read so far, I have the feeling that these notions of crystalline and osmotic swelling are used essentially in the soil mechanics and soil physics communities, but not in clay mineralogy... Please tell me if I am wrong.
