Experiments on Austenitic Ducltile Iron Type D3 tool steel has revealed the change in wear particles sizes after the cryogenic treatment. I would like to know any such similar work that is being done.

I have also conducted experiments on austenitic tool steels that been cryogenically treated (see the paper I've linked).  In my cases the wear results (based on volume removed during reciprocating wear testing) were mixed, with M2 tool steel seemingly showing significant improvements while A2 and D6 did not.

Moving away from cryotreated materials for a moment, I would suggest that changes in wear particle size could be caused by different factors:

- Changes in toughness of the material; a tougher material may produce larger debris that doesn't break up as readily but rather plastically deforms.

- Microstructural changes; for instance a finer grained material may produce finer debris, as cracks have shorter propagation lengths before they reach grain or material boundaries.  A similar effect may result from a change in the distribution of hard precipitates, again altering the mean free crack propagation length.

I should stress however, that these are purely hypotheses - in my work I did not specifically analyse the wear debris, although I wish I had done!

I have studied the effect if cryogenic treatment on the Austenitic Ductile Iron Type D3 Tool Steel. The average size of the wear particles is smaller in case of cryo-treated D3. As a part of my doctoral work i had to hurry with publishing the research work. I have contacted an open journal. I will share the published manuscript with you ASAP.
