Magnesium is more reactive than copper and in its presence, I think, copper does not react with Cl to form CuCl2 at room temperature. Please correct me if I am wrong. What happens at high temperature - temperature above the melting point of MgCl2 (714 C)? Will the copper in contact with MgCl2 dissolve (inert environment)?
