Coke is usually an unwanted product and normally is produced as a by product from destruction of hydrocarbons during cracking processes. My question is whether this solid material has the potential to dissolve in any hydrocarbon, ranging from light to intermediate and heavy products.
Coke is the residual product of thermal decomposition of crude oil or oil products, and as such, it is insoluble in oil products. There could be unreacted coke fractions that can be extracted from the coke matrix but they will depend on the aromaticity of the solvent and the severity of the codificación. Coke is a fluid material depending on temperature of the cokifying matrix which solidifies or precipitates depending on the thermal history of the matrix.
Borys Didyk has referred to the formation of coke and its residual character due to high temperature formation. As highly carbonised coke is obvioulsly not soluble in petroleum. Best Jacques Connan
So-called soft coke produced inside refinery process units can be dissolved in aromatic streams such as FCC cycle oil. Before calcination, coke recovered from delayed coking units can be dissolved to some extent in tetralin. More precisely, the tetralin dissolves in coke, improving the processability of the coke. Calcined coke cannot be dissolved by common organic solvents.
I'm looking a way for removing cokes which has formed around 700degreeC. I have tried to use acetone , decane, EtOH and DMF on room temperature, respectively. It seems to be they are not capable to dissolve(or react) the target, since cokes are mechanically strong to be destroyed. In my case not only for dissolution, even some dispersion was hard to do. Trying to boil with HNO3(aq) between washing with acetone, not so satisfactory too. Hope it helps.
