The grain size of the material at as-cast state is about 1000 μm. I want to make the grain size finer. Does anyone know the heat treatment of austenic steel?
Normally austenitic stainless steels are solution annealed by heating from 950 to 1100 degree C , holding at temperature @ 30 minutes/25 mm thickness followed by water queching. The purpose of the heat treatment is to dissolve all grain boundary carbides and to some extent recrystalization. But in your case you wish to want to make fine grain in casting from 1000 micron to say 40-50 microns , which is not possible by heat treatment.Grain refining in austenitic s.s. is possible only by breaking the cast grains in hot deformation by hot forging/rolling by receystallization. However if you try adding some grain refiners like niobium , some refinement in as cast grains is possible.
Grain refinement usually involes three process, one is steelmaking process by adding micro alloy (Nb, V, Ti and so on) and heating temperature, second is forming process by forging or pressing, the third is heat treatment with different temperature.
some welding area also requires the grain shall not be coarse by controlling the welding parameters, which is similar with steelmaking process.
