I've been observing hummingbirds for quite a few years, and in hummingbirds that breed in the United States, almost all have a white, post-ocular spot just behind the eye.  I've asked this question in various forums, but no one seems to know if it has a function.  I haven't been able to find any research papers that address this topic either.  I was wondering if anyone might have some insight as to the function of this common plumage characteristic in hummingbirds?
