Hi Trevor, normally we used serum from tubes with anticoagulants such as sodium-EDTA to analyse sodium levels for clinical decision making. I am interested in knowing if the sodium in this anticoagulant interferes with the sodium concentration obtained from the patients serum sample.
I thought Mr Kaufman had a reference to his conclusion that the sodium in the anticoagulant doesn't affect the serum sodium concentration if analysed by flame photometry, but he has just informed me he has no reference to what he stated earlier.
I would like some references from any ideas you have with respect to my question.
Thanks for the detailed explanation. Please do you have any literature (reviewed articles) that shows the use of this formular clinically or otherwise. And do you know if this calculation is in use in any clinical setting which you can reccommend to me.
If you look at the quality goal of serum sodium (http://www.westgard.com/biodatabase1.htm), you should recognize that there is no margin for error from added sodium. The allowed maximum bias is less than 0.5 mmol/l.
