I am preparing a presentation on the value and place of reports as communication and assessment tool for secondary school pupils. I have noticed that communication with parents seems to drop off in secondary school and want to find ways to revitalise this. I also feel that reports can form an evaluative tool for teaching and become a valuable public face of a school. I am therefore looking for scholarly support for this.

A pithy definition of communications, which barely scratches the surface of a complex subject, is that it is the process by which information is conveyed through a common system of symbols, signs, or behaviors. Too often, however, "The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place," according to George Bernard Shaw (and many others). In reality, effective communication is the process through which relationships are instituted, sustained, altered, or ended by increases or reductions in meaning. So, strategic communication considers the what, why, where, and how of comprehensive engagement; beyond the typical information life cycle, it is based on values that espouse, principles of continuity, credibility, dialogue, integration, precision, results-orientation, ubiquity, and understanding.
