.. or of a genealogy of his family? Thanking you in advance for any leads. Following is his obituary that appeared in the Gaceta de Madrid, 20 August 1802, p834-835 (apologies for any errors in translation):
"April 4, died in this court, at 77 unfulfilled years of age, His Lordship, Don Nicolas Arredondo y Pelegrin, Haedo & etc, Knight of the Order of Calatrava, Commander of Puertollano, Lt.-General of the Royal Armies: Served His Majesty 61 years, starting as a Cadet in the Spanish Royal Guards infantry, in which body he ascended all grades to Captain. He was in the war in Italy, during her withdrawal from the mountains of S. Pelegrin, on the site and conquest of Tortona, in Battles of Tanaro Crossing, Tanaro, and Basiniana, making Valencia Po and Casal de Mogtgerrado, in the action and surprise of Codono, in evicting the Santines enemies, that of Valchirroso and other gatherings. He served on the command staff as second and first adjutants; and in 1780 was promoted Colonel of the infantry regiment of Guadalajara at Havana, where he acted as Staff General of that Command. He was Governor of Cuba, Governor and Captain-General of the Province of Charcas, and the city of La Plata with the Presidency of the Royal Audencia, where he was promoted to Viceroy of Buenos-Aires and provinces of Rio de la Plata. On his return to Spain he was appointed Captain-General of the Kingdom of Valencia, with the military command of Murcia, and as President of that Audencia. In the long run I credit his courage, military skill, selflessness, love of royal service, zeal for the Catholic religion, which he promoted the spread of, with success among the pampas of Choco and the Paraguay Indians, achieving the conversion of many of them, and their reduction to His Majesty’s obedience. His political knowledge, has greatly beautified the city of Buenos-Aires, and others that were under his command; kindness, charity, and other virtues, make his loss heartfelt, and always of pleasant memory."

Thank you for the reference; this is, indeed, an important publication on Viceroy Arredondo. It is, essentially, a "braggart's list" of accomplishments during his administration. Although it does not provide many personal details, it does provide an outline for his administration during his years in Buenos Aires.

You are certainly the wizard when it comes to instantly finding the online source for any obscure publication. It amazes me how quickly you can narrow-in on the target. Even though I have a prominent book-mark set on my browser to the fine online digital library maintained by the French National Library, I had not thought to use it (yet). I must be approaching senility, for I have often found that the French, such fabulous collectors of historical papers, often have collected obscure publications about the Spanish (and other peoples) that they never thought to collect about themselves! I am glad that this publication was in Spanish, however, for although I read it but poorly, I read it at least three times better than French (and I NEVER try to speak a word of either, unless I am in a restaurant where that is ALL they will speak and I am VERY hungry *hee*hee*).
It looks like the publication that Norbert first cited and to which you found the online link to an 1886 printing, was "lifted" from an earlier publication (which true to Norbert's suggestion, I also found available online at BNF) at:

I notice BOTH that you are in Westphalia AND have an interest in America history. A few years ago, I did a study on an historical farmstead site of an early German immigrant to Texas, named Johan Pieter Daniel Muhlinghaus, born at Radevernmvald, now Remlingrade, near Wupperthal. He is one of the few very early immigrants for which fairly good records (including a very early colored tintype photo) could be located. Fortunately, the site of his farmstead was in pristine condition (when he arrived there in about 1852, beyond the very front of civilization, he was surrounded only by buffalo and dangerous Indians). I have a brief summary chapter from my management report I can share with you if you may be interested in seeing Daniel Muhlinghaus and knowing more about his life and where he ended his life. Who knows, perhaps you may be able to shed even more light on Daniel and his family history at Radevermvald than I was able to find?

Thank you for the suggestion; but, of course, I am one of the strongest adherents and proponents for the use of Google Books (and Scholar) Projects ... we have an expression in the U.S. that captures, precisely, the way I feel about them ... they are the best things "since sliced bread!" Hahahahahahahahah! I have carefully weeded-through the long list of leads harvested from Google Books before coming here (both using the conventional search PLUS the advanced), but with your extra prodding, I believe I shall go back for return look.
