Dear all. I want to prepare La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 powder by solid state reaction using ball mill but i don't know why milling medium should wet by ethanol and how much use it.Can someone help me?
My experience in dealing with powder preparation using high energy ball mill and ethanol as the medium is that we usually take the wt.% ratio between the powder : zirconia balls : ethanol = 1 : 5 : 5/3 and we milled for 2 hours.
There is no general rules because it depends on milling efficiency including final size and its distribution, impurity contents up-taken during milling, and milling conditions(time and charging conditions). For efficient milling, generally the voleme of all contents of balls, powder, and milling media before milling takes less than half of the space in the jar in order to provide enough impact via ball drop during rotation. In the volume of all contents to be milled, it is recommedable to start from selecting the ball content by volume. The volume of balls charged in the jar is also recommended to take less than half of the internal vulume of jar. Next you have to decide the ball-to-powder ration, generally between 5:1 to 10:1. In the labotatory, many people take 10:1 ratio, but it depends on the density of powder because it determines its volme in the jar. If your powder has a similar density with balls, you can start from a ratio of 10:1. Then, when you pour liquid milling media in the jar charged with balls and powder, the liquid line in the jar goes up from the bottom and approaches to the top surface of balls. You are recommended to stop at this moment. I recommend the starting conditions. You have to check the milling results and adjust milling conditions step by step.
