A classic paper in conservation biology that definitely has a philosophical outlook, and considers the role of zoos in conservation biology, is the 1986 paper by Michael Soulé, Michael Gilpin, William Conway & Tom Foose, "The millenium ark: How long a voyage, how many staterooms, how many passengers?" Zoo Biology 5 (2): 101-113. This was a Special Issue of Zoo Biology -- the Proceedings of the Workshop on Genetic Management of Captive Populations. It's still a good read today!
A more recent paper that is a sort of "book end" to the Soulé et al. (1986) "Millenium Ark" paper, and focuses on reproductive technology as it might be applied to the conservation of endangered species is a 2014 publication by Monfort in Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology 753:15-31. It has been posted here on ResearchGate:
