NRG metrics is a (new) firm that sells data on corporate governance and ownership. Does anyone here know the data and has information on the data quality?
Your question is very interesting. I too have discovered the existence of NRG, the data appear to be well structured and complete, but I have no news on their quality.
I reviewed several databases as part of my doctorate and found ALL contained data errors, some quite serious. NRG did not exist at that time so was not considered in my sample.
Looking at NRG's website, it has clumsy English, at least one spelling mistake and states the following:
"Our goal is to provide accurate data about corporate governance ... and especially on the field of ownership structure is an important disadvantage."
and goes on to describe their approach to data gathering:
"In order to build our database we have created an analysis team that collects data from annual reports, sec filings, corporate governance reports etc." (Note that the SEC abbreviation is in lowercase instead of uppercase).
In the absence of more comprehensive description I would think this is prone to error (as was the case with several other data sources I reviewed).
Therefore if you intend to rely on NRG data you would need to do sample checks back to audited source material, being annual reports and SEC filings and include a commentary on the check results in your research.
