I am not an expert in this but I am currently working in bioleaching of heavy metals from solid industrial wastes and incinerator ash.
Bioleaching is a safe and non toxic method (don't know how much efficient compared to chemical methods). Use of microorganisms can do a better job as they have the ability to sustain harsh and polluted environment. Depending upon the waste (such as low, neutral or high pH of the waste) autotrophic such as Thiobacillus sp. or hetereotrophic bacteria such as alkaliphiles can be used. Microorganisms produce organic acids that slubilize or mobilize metals, chelating agents that binds metals, siderophores, enzymes etc. that can be used to treat heavy metals in leachates of different wastes and incinerator ashes.
There is much literature available on the web. for bioleaching related literature you can search for the studies of GM Gadd, Helmut Brandl, HL Erhlich, Bosecker, and many more.
