I have a lot of luck using structured essays. A structured essay asks a series of stated questions that must be covered in the answer to the overall essay question. The essays are such that the student has to research the answers outside the textual material. The essays are grade using a rubric based on the answers that I developed to the internal questions inside the essay. This teaches the students what should be included n answering research questions.

In a structured essay, the students are asked to include the answers to several questions in their response. This is an example of a structured essay that I use in my CJ 4000 Hate Crimes class.

In essay #1 you are asked to examine the murder of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Write 3 or 4 paragraphs covering the following questions and any other information that you consider to be relevant: 1. Who was Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.? 2. Who killed Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.? 3. How was he killed? 4. Where was he killed? 5. When was he killed? 6. Why was he killed? 7. Was the killer identified? captured? convicted? 8. Was there any evidence against the killer or killers?

Essay#1 is due not latter than 02/15/17. 

Rubric Essay#1

Who was Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.? (Religious and Civil Right Leader) Why was he killed?(His involvement in Civil Rights Protests) Who killed King? (James Earl Ray) Where was King killed? (Memphis, Tennessee ) When was King killed? (April 4, 1968) How was he killed? (Gunshot) Was the killer ever identified captured, convicted? (James Earl Ray, captured, pled guilty) Was there any evidence against the killer? ( Ray confessed and his prints were on the rifle. He was seen by a witness leaving the place the shot was fired from. Ray had rented a room across from the place King was shot. A radio with Ray's prison ID# on it was found there. Ray's white mustang was seen near the scene of the shooting. Thus the probability of Ray being the shooter is very high. However, the question becomes who put him up to it? Who brought the rifle (Ray was a convicted felon and could not legally own one)? Who bought Ray his airline ticket or got him his passport? Who paid for his defense and visited him in prison. FYI, it was a state’s rights group that opposed civil rights. The alleged criminal involvement of Jowers or others has never been proven.)
