What are your favorite things about it and your gripes? We are thinking of getting it with the XYZ motorized stage for neuron reconstruction as well as cell counting.
Also, what are the benefits/pitfalls to using the XYZ stage vs. a confocal? Can we simply use a confocal to take the image (which we already have access to) and the Neurolucida software?

we have Neurolucida, and use it daily. Obviously, we love it. We use images captured from a stand alone scope, but would love to have our own dedicated scope with motorized xyz.
I would discuss with MBF about using separate confocal: I know some are easier to work with than others. Calibration can be a minor issue, from memory.
I also use it daily - but find it extremely fiddly. The advantage of getting your own XYZ is not straightforward to answer. If we get a fully integrated system - say a Zeiss 700/710/780 with MBF intergration then it would be very good but beware the cobbled together system on a moderate budget. It also depends on whether and how much brightfield work you do. Happy to discuss with you further.
Thank you both for helping! We have been discussing with MBF whether or not to get the XYZ stage, but of course, they are really trying to sell it to us. We are not yet convinced that getting the stage is optimal for our lab's purposes. We have the funding through a grant, but could definitely re-allocate funds to use for other useful purposes. Andrew, do you have any publications in particular that you have used images from a stand-alone with?
