Yes we have.

The problem is: higher weight and worse balistic chracteristics.

With most of these darts you may only shoot 17m.

However, Alain Licoppe in Belgium has used those darts a lot, perhaps he has some more experiences?

Oh, and we used them on wild boar. Sometimes they breakt the darts before you may find them!

We tried a few times on wild leopard. Not very successfull; as Oliver mentioned the higher weight can be a problem. However, dart placement becomes important since animal the can lie on dart if you hit is on the side, rendering the tracking dart ineffective. Second, safety becomes and issue; we had to track a darted leopard in the field (at night), with no knowledge of how much dart injected, condition of leopard etc. In the end we decided it not to be a vialble option because of these concerns. Might be more viable in confined conditions. Hope this helps.

Thanks, that's an important input. What needle did both of you used, so the dart stays on the animal?

Also, what transmitter did you use? DanInject have a transmitter that comes with a 10 cm sleeve. This really makes the dart long and increase the risk of breaking. Telenax have a small transmitter which might work better.

Oh, I have to ask for the darts, we used another than our gun-manufacturer.

the needles were special with a selfmade hook! ;-)

We used the system from Telinject (Transmitter syringes TM32 & receivers STABO-XR 2001). Needles were barbed. I guess you can make your own system, but I would prefer the commercial stuff.

we used Pneudart transmitter darts with Daninject projector. We had some good results on red deer and wild boar) but some balistic problems as reported by Oliver. The problem was the distance to the target (around 20 m) given the weight of the dart.

Now we use another DanInject caliber included in a Swiss (KORA) device (Minimally invasive capture system) combining the rifle and a night camera that we control remotely. The Pneudart can not be used with this caliber and we use a dog to find the animal back (...).

Next week we will receive transmitters specially designed to be added on Daninject darts. We will experience them soon. Some more feedback later.

The barbed needle I have is 2mmX30mm, do you think that's long enough?

if you dart wild boar it is not really 7not only the question of the length of the needle but of the "strength". It is important, that the needle (wall thickness) is strong enough, you may not use needles for blowpipes, even on blowpipe darts. The wall thickness must be strong enough, otherwise the needle will be folded and thus not enough narcotics may get into the muscle...

However 30 mm may be a bit to short, when a wild boar is really fat in Autumn.

as reported by A. Licoppe, we used Pneudart transmitter darts with Daninject projector (13mm burrel). We had good results on red deer) but some balistic problems. This problems can be partially resolved using Teledart products (in particular using 2ml transmitter syringes). You can use barbed needles of Teledart or Daninject.

I'm attaching a picture of the DanInject arrow I bought, with the sleeve with which it connects to the arrow. As you can imagine, together their length is about 20 cm. I made a few trials shooting with it, and increasing the gas pressure by 2 bars above the recommended pressure for a specific distance yielded very good results at 20 m distance. We had a small mishap and for now we can't continue working with it. But it might do the job. One problem is that once it hits the animal, it has higher risks of getting removed by the animal or just fall.

Can you specify what drugs you used?

Hi Alain,

Yes, it worked really well. We only lost very few darts after the transmitter was lost (one sow was sitting on the dart, one fallow deer hit a tree with the dart). But as far as I remember (one colleague did the technical work in this case) you have to cut a new winding to fix the transmitter.

This is an (slowly) on going project...I've had very few trials with different animals (wild boar and jackals) and darting methods (gun, pistol, remotely operated system).

I had one success with a wild boar that I darted from ambush at around 15 meters. The Dan Inject radio tag with its sleeve, together with the dart makes it a VERY long thing (ca 30 cm.). This makes the flight velocity very low so the animals have a lot of time to move before the dart arrives at the spot.

Soon I should get the dart with transmitter of Pneu-dart for trial. This is a much smaller dart without a sleeve. Very easy to operate (reed switched with a magnet).

Together with a Pneu-dart gun, this was used here to dart mountain gazelles by colleagues from up to 60-70 meters.

This dart can also be used with a Dan-Inject gun - if you have the right barrel and adjustment.

I will let you know if and when I'll make progress. If anyone else gained knowledge in the meantime - please share.

I would be very interested to hear if you have any updates on this. We use dan inject rifle model im and jmsp25. we have no serious ballistic issues and can easily dart 25 meter with accuracy (obviously zeroed with actual filled transmitter dart at shooting range) but have serious issues with the AR receiver and antenna set from dan inject (which actually only claim 450m anyway). We can not get it to work accurate and any useful distance. for that reason we started looking at the pneudart set which claims 1.5 miles and am delighted to hear that the dart might potentially fit the dan inject but before going off buying the transmitter kit i wonder if anybody has any experience with it in the dan inject guns....

Howeever, did you think about changing the mixture of anesthesia?

I would not use receivers like AR (or similar genarel receivers) for thet issue. Better use specific receivers (liek WildlifeMaterials, biotrack, ...)

Hi Guys,

I didn't get a lot of real experience with the Dan Inject, albeit I spent quite a few nights ambushing on tress and hides.

I darted a jackal once, but the dart bounced off.

apart from the instance when the boar escaped the dart while it was flying, I had darted wild boar twice. Once the dart failed, and the second I finally got success.

It looks like DanInject's dart with the transmitter and sleeve is just too long and heavy.

I haven't really used it in the field, but the Pneudart radio-dart is very easy to use (switched on\of with a magnet), it's not long and looks very elegant. It even has a led lighting which helps the final locating at night. You probably know that the drug delivery is based on a detonator.

I haven't tried it, but it should work well with the larger, 13 mm DanInject barrel (used for the larger 5 and 10 ml syringes).

As for receivers, I agree with Olli. Go for R-1000 by Com-Spec.

I have the new pneudart equipment ordered and hope to soon have more experience. I will be using the jmsp25 daninject rifle and the im rifle with 13 mm barrels. I have ordered both 2 and 3 ml receiver darts and all required kit. I spoke with them this morning and supposedly all the new telemetry kit comes from a collaboration with marshall. To my knowledge marshall is a market leader in telemetry use in falconry and indeed a marshall device I tested looks very similar to the pneudart pd1000. The transmitters are also from marshall made for pneudart, all sounds very promising.

I will update when all is working.

PS: i keep testing the daninject telemetry system and will update on that too but indeed the darts are very long, sometimes have fitting problems (because you have to replace tape and a pain to dismantle everytime you need to pressurise etc)

We did that for wild boar, worked decently, but sometimes a little hard to find them in dense vegetation, in the dark. The most efficient way was to find them in the fields afer harvest, drive up to them with a pickup truck and have a shooter hang out the window.... usual distance when shooting about 5-7 m. We could get 2-3/night
