With the increasing use of echocardiographic contrast for both endocardial border delineation , and in the evaluation of myocardial perfusion , we are faced with the indication for the procedure in pregnant women. Logically the contraindication due to the use of medication in the first quarter is present , but from there in situations where the examination is absolutely necessary. What to do? How far is safe use of echocardiographic contrast ?
I work with high risk pregnancies on a daily basis but I have never been in need of contrast echo in a pregnant woman. Can you describe a case, where there is a need?
In clinical situations in which there are identified ventricular dysfunction detected by echo in pregnant women ( and there is a possibility of ischemic cardiomyopathy for example) and the use of the contrast can be beneficial to elucidated the diagnosis. What to do?

If you use agitated kolloidal infusion medium (HAES, Gelafundin) you will have good echo-contrast with minimal risk for the mother to be or the fetus.
