PanelomiX is a tool to compute panels of biomarkers based on thresholds. What are some of the advantages and disadvantages? What other similar tools are available?
we were using PanelomiX in our lab to find the optimal panel of biomarkers in studies in which we're assessing several biomarkers.
For me, the strengths are that you can choose between a more specific or more sensitive biomarkers' predictive model, so the PanelomiX will give you the best panel depending on the option you chose (sensitivity or specificity). In each case, PanelomiX calculates the optimal cut-off points for each biomarker. Moreover, you can add binary clinical variables (like YES/NO) or also other clinical continuous variables (for them, also a cut-off point will be calculated; another option is that you work with an already chosen cut-off point, given that variable as binary).
Under my experience, in some cases you need to check if these cut-off points make sense within your experiment.
Other tips: if you have a large cohort or you want to assess a large number of markers, be patient! it takes some time, but you can let PanelomiX working in its own. Panels around 4-5 total variables are preferrable.
