In combination with school performance of 8-9 year old children we would like to survey the SES (socioeconomic status). Normally this is done through a parents' questionnaire. But does anyone have any experience in collecting the SES from the young pupils themselves?

SES has material and cultural components.
We assess the material aspects via items like:
Do you have your room all to yourself?
How many bathrooms do you have at home?
(rooms with a bathtub/shower or both)
Cultural aspects by asking:
How many books does your family own at home?
