I'm thinking about trying this 'novel' ammonia aqueous solution method for growing well-aligned ZnO nanorod arrays on glass slides; it has been done before on Silicon substrates.
Questions: 1. Would you advise this method or do you know of a better way? 2. Its a little unclear in the article, but I am assuming the substrate is lithographically patterned before the Zn metal film is evaporated on, to fulfill a similar role to a anodised aluminium patterned substrate... is that right? Thanks.

there are two types of synthesis methods:
i) random growth of ZnO nanowires using thermal decomposition of Zinc acetate dihydrate (this is in powder form)
ii) vertically aligned growth of ZnO nanorods over ZnO seed coated substrates (e.g. the one mentioned by Dilek) also known as hydrothermal method.

Seed layer of ZnO is very important to get highly oriented ZnO nanowire array. Try with highly oriented seed layer (ZnO thin film). Just annealed your seed layer in air around 400 degree for one hour, may solve your problem
If I may add another question: how many of you tried to get piezoelectric response from the ZnO nanorods? In what arrengement? With what success? If this is "off" here, I can create a separate question.
Or you can grow nanowires in nanoporous templates via electrodeposition as my colleague Dr Ionut Enculescu did here and in other papers http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/sia.2749/abstract
