Every Monday, up pops a notification that I have X number of 'reads' and that 'Your contributions were the most read contributions from your institution'. Great, but the number is pretty much the same (+/-50) every week .... and it's been going on for years. I deleted my Academia.edu account because the similar metric was clearly being manipulated by the system (lots of consistent readers from non-descript places). Is the RG metric score just some ploy for ego-boosting?

Thanks for the interesting question. I have the same situation. But I hadn't thought about it before. I would be interested to know the opinion of colleagues who will help to understand this.

I sort of understand the ego-masage thing (get people to continually engage with the platform and feel it gives them 'value'). But when you find that X number of your reads are from a non-descript small town in Kentucky with no university, and they 'read' you regularly every week without fail, then you either have a devoted niche fanbase, or most likely, a stalker! Knowing the economics would be interesting, but if people start to distrust one metric of a platform, then they quickly question others (which the developers use to 'sell' the platform).

RG platform count and display the number of reads for each publication on ResearchGate, each question asked and answer added in Q&A, every project, and all project updates...
So do you constantly get a similar amount of reads every month (I do), and do you imagine that you are consistently read more than your colleagues (my field is very niche, so in my case I don't).
I can agree about those amounts, they are somehow similar every week (between 4090 and 4492 in last 10 weeks). Next, I do believe that they are enough correct, mainly because I can rarely see other colleagues from my institution asking/answering...
It's funny though, because I have seldom asked questions or added/updated projects for the last couple of years. But the reads etc. stay consistent. There are over 1000 members of my ex-institution here on RG, most with fields more popular than mine and who are far more established. So, I would not figure to be 'on top' so regularly.
I see. Well, we can see our most read publications, as well as our most read research (by selecting Show all from a combo box) at our stats pages regarding Report for week ending. Check your latest weekly report...

anybody have an idea of a cut off date you know when my new reads become old hat? I would much prefer a month rate or even yearly rate to compare myself to me.
