I generally agree with Dr. Suchita Mukherjee. Any diuretic can result in reduced symptoms of UTI. There is a great controversy in literature on the nutritional remedies for UTI. There are studies that showed the effect of milk and fruit juices consumption especially berry extracts in reducing UTI recurrence. Cranberry attracted much attention recently, but current studies suggest no effect of this extract on UTI recurrence. A recent meta-analysis revealed that children and women with recurrent UTI benefit more from cranberry usage. On the other hand coriander seed is proven to have antibacterial effects in vitro but we are not sure if it is as effective in vivo. In my opinion recurrent and refractory UTIs are related to other risk factors and underlying conditions that can be prevented or cured resulting in more satisfactory outcomes.

Long advocated to prevent cystitis, cranberry juice contains proanthocyanidins that appear to inhibit the attachment of pathogens to uroepithelium.45 Randomized trials suggest that 200 to 750 ml daily of cranberry (or lingonberry) juice or cranberry-concentrate tablets reduces the risk of symptomatic, recurrent infection by 12 to 20 percent. The amount of actual cranberry in products marketed as cranberry juice ranges from 5 to 100 percent. The actual cranberry content of tablets and capsules varies, and their equivalence to juice products is uncertain.

Several studies indicate that postcoital voiding does not prevent cystitis.

Commentary: In premenopausal women with recurrent urinary tract infections, may indicate continuous antibiotic prophylaxis at the expense of a higher incidence of bacterial resistance or cranberry prophylaxis at the expense of reduced efficiency. A third alternative is to indicate the self-treatment of clinical relapses motivated and skilled women. The cranberry was less effective than antibiotic prophylaxis in recurrent urinary tract infections, but was associated with less development of antibiotic resistance.
