I believe that the guiding principles of testing "the quality" of empirical studies depend on the underlying philosophy of research, namely in positivism (quantitative) the principles are generalization, validity and reliability; whereas in constructivism (qualitative) its best to use Guba’s constructs that correspond to the criteria employed by the positivist investigator:
a) credibility (in preference to internal validity);
b) transferability (in preference to external validity/generalisability); c) dependability (in preference to reliability);
d) confirmability (in preference to objectivity)
