My Msc student is doing a project which involves geochemical analysis of sedimentary rocks which may be of volcanic origin. She needs to plot the data on different discriminative diagrams. Does anybody know of any good, free software for this purpose.
you could possibly suggest to her to use ImageJ. It comes with lots of tutorials and examples as shown here http://rsb.info.nih.gov/ij/docs/examples/index.html. They also have a wide community user support group.

I would suggest R. Its powerful.. Ggplot2 is one of the best packages for plotting.

I would use use PIGI3.5 software which produces many data tables, create many different kinds of plots or you can produce a plot the way you want. You can use legends in colours, symbols etc. It is very good for report writing and present the findings through power point.

Albeit indeed originally designed for igneous and metamorphic rocks, GCDkit would plot anything. I often show my students an example of plotting a sample dataset on religion in Switzerland. This system also allows, relatively easily, adding new plugins and user-defined plot templates. See blog.gcdkit.org.

It works fine on my CorelDRAW X8. Ask the author to share a repository link outside China (the primary cloud is Baidu in Chinese), e.g. google drive. He responses quickly.
R, or maybe Origin/Origin Pro (from Origin Lab). It's easy to learn if you are not comfortable with programs like R.
