The problem of conservation on a global scale transcends biology and any particular discipline. The solution seems incredibly simple: human laws must be subordinated to natural laws, ecosystem by ecosystem. But implementation is almost impossible because humans must stop being what we are. Global governance is conservative because every government representative is caught up in the consensus that put him in power. They prioritize the "me-here-now" instead of the necessary "all-everywhere-forever" (which few would vote for). The crisis is philosophical. The problem to be solved is governance.

In the poorer countries the measures began meets the convention on biological diversity and the sustainable development goals. However, the strategies of national plans differ from the needs at local level and the demands of singular sectors such as the fisheries. The issue is complex and the governments should be implementing integrated coastal management policies at least in the most critical zones. But it means that the indicators of these management proposals would be sensible instruments to gather social aspects on:  unemployement, health level of coastal communities (in fact fishermen and their families), impact of human migration to coastal from inland sites, paper of industrial fishing on competence with small-sale fisheries, alternative economic activities in the surroundings (as tourism or agriculture), and finally historical income of the local villagers.

All these are heavy works to any national state in the world. Therefore, if we can aid I think that the private consultants and other organizations should consider the possibility of donate free time to made local plans in some countries and contribute to the improvement of the environmental management of issues as the illegal fishing.  Obviously, each plan requires funds to be implemented and it is other trouble.

I agree Jose--international objectives must be implemented locally and that takes subject matter expertise, funding and time.  In my current book project for Springer, I am including a chapter demonstrating how intl policy becomes national law, state law and then in cities.  Although my topic is not fisheries specifically but land use, they do converge.  

Adrian-much of life is politics.  I agree!  But you also point out how resolution is both personal and in need of a multi-disciplinary approach.  Right now I am tackling a book project combining public law, environmental conditions and public health.  I think that it is necessary to look at dynamic conditions, where they overlap, and who/what organization is best suited to lead problem-solving.  However, this approach does not fit into "standard' academic writing but I think it generates more information from a variety of stakeholders and results in problem-solving that may be painful but very rewarding.

We can use our scientific and ecological knowledge to give advice to decision makers or managers, for example about where and how to restore habitats of endangered species. Sharing our knowledge with the public is important too, because a knowledge of environmental problems and their solutions is necessary for large-scale behavioural changes.

Jessica-citizen engagement is important on the personal and community level.  One of the chapters in my current book project talks about the environmental impact on public health leading to high mortality rates--pollution and cardiac/lung disease, heavy metals and endocrine system disease, etc.  I also suggest engaging in city planning and environmental assessments, among others.  Of course, not everyone will respond to the same thing so it isimportant to keep thefire burning and churning out new ways to include citizens.

I think that us as scientists, especially in emerging and/or poor countries, should show science to people. To explain in many ways (school, social media) our findings in a simple language would help them understand the importance of science and conservation. Then it would be at least less difficult to make conservation policies be done and effective.

Hello Fabricio: Thank you for your answer. I think engaging students when they are younger can start a flame for a good social cause.  What I am finding is that often students will talk to their parents about the things that they are learning and help get them involved. 

Global Conservation efforts can only be meaningful if they are not entropy driven. Processes aiming at global conservation are more than likely meant to conserve superiority in trade and weapons to look for targets, wage proxy wars and continue to maintain no-win situation. No one should talk of conservation when trillion dollars are wasted in conserving Nuclear Arsenals and another few trillions are stacked by the billionaires to enjoy their richness. 

Beth Ann Fiedler, I strongly suggest that you include a chapter on Social  Pollution and spell out that global resources are being depleted in the lust of Industrialized Countries to sustain war preparedness situations. You will save trillions once you stop thinking the chosen few to be your enemies.  Remember HATE BEGETS HATE, AND TERROR BEGETS TERROR, BUT TERRORISM CANNOT BE ANNIHILATED.

Mr. Beg, Though I respect your right to an opinion, I do not believe you have a right to deny my right to discuss conservation.   For your information, one of my chapters in this book is with a public administrator originally from Pakistan.  We discuss how the miltary in Pakistan receives a large expenditure and population health is ignored while young boys living in the street are molested by adult men with no concern for these children.   In a prior book, I discussed risk management using a new cardiac hospital in Pakistan created by the military to help civilians, too.  I am not blind to what is happening in the world but I am choosing to cross barriers to bring innovation for problem resolution through education, reason, and in the sprit of collaboration.  Tell me Mr. Beg, would an educated, single, female Christian woman be welcome in your village?  War, hate, prejudice, self-indulgene, and greed are not unique to industrialized nations.  Before you shake your fist at America or EU nations, open your eyes. I am aware of the ugliness in emerging nations as well as the long plight of industrialized nations.  People are welcome to share posts and thoughts even when they differ from mine, but please do so with some modicum of decency, respect,and without harassing those who wish to have an intelligent conversation.  .

I would like receive more details on the project. Working in Indonesia, particularly in the Coral triangle of the Maluku and Papua, I am sure I can share the information on fishing activities here

In addition, I would also campaign for joining in the hunt against illegal mining and deforestation. The two are key environmental challenges in my region too aside from what you expertly suggested.

Dear Dickson-I wish I could take the credit for this but the US Center for Disease Control has a variety of programs like the one I posted as an example. I just wanted to share the information and give a general path so that individuals would be able to see if they could find a match for their particular specialty.

Depends on goal and subject matter

Beth, I think that a key issue is the shared technological and financial resources from the rich countries to the poorer ones. Currently there are funds such as the GEF which apparently have been support conservation initiatives in the southern countries, however many troubles generated by mining, overfishing and the deforestation require technological solutions to improve methods. For example, the use of biotechnology in minerals processing or the addition of new processing steps in both small-scale fisheries and the non timber forest products. The fields mentioned require not only capital and technological capabilities but the identification of externalities of the human activities in great scale such mining. In the end, the ecological damage would be accounted in each product or material obtained. It is an old idea thereby use the same code line that the enterprises and economic power centres of world. In other words, the advanced portion of the planet might share responsibilities with the other countries in the conservation of nature in a more tangible way.

Good evening Dr. Pizarro. In many ways I agree that technology transfer is important. But, I also think that countries deemed undeveloped should also stop the brain drain, support US education, and the return of those individuals to their native lands to apply what they have learned. Other factors include addressing over consumption and waste in the west and EU, balancing responsibility, and open access to innovative research solutions. But the mechanisms for these hopeful remedies are not in place. Developing nations can only fund undeveloped countries to a certain point. At some point, the internal mechanisms of a nation (i.e., education, resources, sustainable development, infrastructure) must be developed or else pouring technology into undeveloped nations will continue to have only a moderate impact, in my opinion.
