I usually give each student in the class a copy of the course description and course plan at the beginning of the new academic year so that they will be familiar with the material they will study through out the semester.
Yes, I do so at the beginning of each semester so that the students will know the nature of the topics they will study during the semester. They will create topics, learn details about each topic and prepare independent reports on each topic. Doing so will help me expand the details of the subject to increase their skills. Cognitive in this aspect.
At my university in Illinois, USA, it is required that all faculty members provide the course outline, grading criteria and course objectives at the beginning of each semester.
Yes, I do so at the beginning of each academic year so that the students will get an idea about the topics they will study during the semester. They will recognize the main topics, learn and get information about each topic and prepare single reports on each topic.
I think , it is very importnt to follow the course discription .
Very interesting discussion. I would add that at each beginning, it was a lecture, a meeting, a training must be called the so-called " technical details, including the specific topics that will familiarize your audience with you. Otherwise, it will not be interesting or expected, plus it may be uncomfortable, that is, not to get the desired effect unless you are clear and specific at the outset.
Yes, the doctor distributes the plan at the beginning of the year to familiarize students with the subjects and topics that we will discuss during the semester
Usually at the beginning of each academic year the students will have a lecture by the department staff describing the whole syllabus for each subject given including theory lectures and practical sessions, as well as methods of examination, distributions of the marks, time tables for lectures and practical sessions, if possible at this early lecture. But sure it would be displaced within a week.
Thank you very much, @ Marwah Firas, Zainab A Makawi, Lamia Al- Naama, Emad Kamil Hussein and Segun Michael Abegunde for your interesting answers. Best regards. Hazim.
This is important. You should be ready with the course outline before the start of the semester itself. Prepare the course outline covering objectives, lecture and practical schedules, assignments, contact hours, assessment criteria, main references books along with an outline of expectations of students. Explain the course outline at the first lecture itself, and inform the students where and how to get help, facilities, helpful web sites, learning support, and other general information.
Dear Hazim, it is really important to give students an idea about what's ahead in the semester. I always write the program on the Bb along some references so that students can prepare themselves to the lectures before coming to class.
Dear Bachir. This is really interesting. At the beginning of each semester, we photocopy the course plan and give each student a copy so that they can be familiar about the items due to be covered during the course. Best regards. Hazim.
I went though this intresting discussion. The conclusion states that most instructors do circulate their course plans to their students at the beginning of the course to familiarize them with its goals and objectives.
It is necessary to provide your students with the course guidelines as this helps them understand what is required from them in the course. It also helps you realize your course objectives easily and effectively. More importantly, this pushes students to get ready and familiarize themselves with the course objectives, the course teaching methods, and the assessment policy. Rigorously speaking, those, for instance, who wish for obtaining an excellent grade must then work harder to achieve and realize the requirements of such a grade as it is clearly stated in the grading/assessment policy (one essential part/section of the overall course guidelines)!
Below is an example of as assessment policy for an excellent grade:
-Excellent (90-100): The excellent grade means that a candidate has shown a superior grasp of the given materials, and produced presentations/papers that excel in organization, integration, and expression. An excellent grade means that the candidate has done exceptional work in all areas that are evaluated: presentations, review paper, research project, and participation/discussion, and exams. “Exceptional” means not only meeting, but exceeding the instructor’s highest expectations. (“Innovative”, “creative”, “perceptive”, “thought-provoking”, “exciting” are adjectives that apply to an excellent-level work).
