Twitter is a waste of time for science communication. Every department seems to have a few tryhards who tweet about their papers and publications, but there isn't evidence it achieve better exposure of papers or funding.

Twitter experience depends on those who interacts with you and vice versa. I do share mine on twitter because i have over 12,000 follower's and it gain high visibility. But for academic related share of information, preprint and RG are best place to share new findings

I don't have a Twitter account precisely because I consider that social network useless for scientific purposes. Absurd people offer those who don't care about empty content responses.

I think very few people use Twitter in a practical way. For example, journalists can serve to know the news in real time and be informed instantly. I don't see another real utility for other professionals.

In the Brexit campaign and debate it can clearly be seen that journalists and politiciants are very actively using twitter which can be easily seen on www.theguardian.com on all live-feeds of the sittings of the house of commons...

Science communication is seen as critical for the disciplines of ecology and conservation, where research products are often used to shape policy and decision making. Scientists are increasing their online media communication, via social media and news. Such media engagement has been thought to influence or predict traditional metrics ofscholarship, such as citation rates. Here, we measure the association between citationrates and the Altmetric Attention Score—an indicator of the amount and reach of the attention an article has received—along with other forms of bibliometric performance (year published, journal impact factor, and article type). We found that Attention Score was positively correlated with citation rates. However, in recent years, we detectedincreasing media exposure did not relate to the equivalent citations as in earlier years;signalling a diminishing return on investment. Citations correlated with journal impactfactors up to∼13, but then plateaued, demonstrating that maximizing citations doesnot require publishing in the highest-impact journals. We conclude that ecology and conservation researchers can increase exposure of their research through socialmedia engagement and, simultaneously, enhance their performance under traditionalmeasures of scholarly activity."

"Abstract:

Scientists are increasingly using Twitter as a tool for communicating science. Twitter can promotescholarly discussion, disseminate research rapidly, and extend and diversify the scope of audiences reached.However, scientists also caution that if Twitter does not accurately convey science due to the inherent brevityof this media, misinformation could cascade quickly through social media. Data on whether Twitter effectivelycommunicates conservation science and the types of user groups receiving these tweets are lacking. To addressthese knowledge gaps, we examined live tweeting as a means of communicating conservation science at the2013 International Congress for Conservation Biology (ICCB). We quantified and compared the user groupssending and reading live tweets. We also surveyed presenters to determine their intended audiences, which wecompared with the actual audiences reached through live tweeting. We also asked presenters how effectivelytweets conveyed their research findings. Twitter reached 14 more professional audience categories relativeto those attending and live tweeting at ICCB. However, the groups often reached through live tweeting werenot the presenters’ intended audiences. Policy makers and government and non-governmental organizationswere rarely reached (0%, 4%, and 6% of audience, respectively), despite the intent of the presenters. Plenarytalks were tweeted about 6.9 times more than all other oral or poster presentations combined. Over half thepresenters believed the tweets about their talks were effective. Ineffective tweets were perceived as vague ormissing the presenters’ main message. We recommend that presenters who want their science to be commu-nicated accurately and broadly through Twitter should provide Twitter-friendly summaries that incorporaterelevant hashtags and usernames. Our results suggest that Twitter can be used to effectively communicate speakers’ findings to diverse audiences beyond conference walls."

Twitter is faster for communication and so are whatsapp and other online messenger services. However, the target people exist in a scientific community like RG and its updates are pretty faster and people immediately recognize the work and start following us.

And due to the ways of the special subjects - some fields simply want to spread their ideas to the general public, e.g. to combat destruction of natural habitats or the climate change...
