Social media are becoming key communication channels. Do you use Twitter or Facebook to communicate with your students? Which one do your prefer and why?
we prefer and advise a face-to face conversation, emails and TEXT messages...very rarely a telephonic conversation based on urgency or unable to contact in the above modes....
I have been using FB successfully to communicate with my students. I also email them and send SMS through our online platform ASU Online. This past year I did not teach and therefore, most communications were administrative in nature. However, before that I used them to communicate with my students.
Many thanks for your answers. So most of you don´t use social media to communicate with students. However, I must say I started using Twitter to connect with my students some months ago and I am really satisfied.
I am teaching Media Ethics and TV and Radio Programming. There are several students who send tweets to me talking about media bad practices, examples, etc. I think it is really interesting. They are interacting with me and, the most important thing, they are really motivated.
Dear @Jesus, there are other medias that are more effective than FB and Twitter; for example, Piazza is designed to interact with students in a scientific medium.
Yes, I prefer Twitter. I use a hashtag for the course number so students can easily follow the conversation. I also create lists with resources they can follow to prepare for pop quizzes (e.g., New York Times Bits Blog).
