As per this present state of education system and it's development as far as my knowledge is concerned I don't think we need more higher designation beyond Professor,in Higher Education. We just need to raise the commitment and competency of the teaching and administrative process. Changing names and promotion is not mandatory at all cases least we see the need for it. All teachers are to target their effective teaching and well manage administration in their profession. In short we need quality teachers for quality education and designation is just the power added to the teachers to commit more. So Highering of designation is not so much necessary in this case till we see the need of empowering more if this empowerment is literally not necessary and if it is just for name fame. We can aim for higher only when we could manage well the present resources otherwise it may even cause confusion and inflation.

There is no need for more positions, but when Professor and his work is valued, his/her satisfaction and productivity rises, and he/she is motivated to maintain or improve the good work. Praise and recognition play important role. Professor want respect and valued by others for his/her contribution.

Higher positions are always there like Directors, Head etc. etc. but they are not able to perform teaching duties as they are having several other matters to do. But they can plan some motivation lectures for students.

My feeling is that teaching positions at top universities are very competitive and, of course, they are based on research merits, which is good. However, one frequent complaint of many university students is that during lectures they do not get much of the teaching content because some professors lack the talent and adequate training for teaching. My belief is that a good teaching is fundamental for the future professional development and success at the work place of students who pay expensive tuition fees for an education which is expected to be of very high quality taking into account both research and teaching.

Teaching ability is needed if you really want to help efficiently your students, otherwise is just half help. On the other hand, help with your assignments can be found at any time everywhere online.

I agree with many of the responses thus far....I do not think that adding additional titles after "professor" is necessary, however, regardless of the size of the institution of higher learning, recognizing the additional achievements completed by the faculty member goes a long way!! I have one year completed teaching at a small private 4-year university and I appreciate feedback (positive or negative) that will improve my teaching skills. I will begin my dissertation in a couple of weeks and I am sure I will have more of an appreciation of both research and teaching that I can include in my teaching experience. I went into this profession because I truly enjoy working with college age students and believe I can make a difference in the student's outcome as they persist in their educational journey. Thank you.

Actually to get job as a professor is really big achievement. Definitely at this one has secured ample amount of knowledge and experience. So everyone at this stage utilized its best to design the students this is more important and ultimately its big satisfaction for everyone.

Some universities have one step beyond full professor. They call that position, Distinguished Professor. Some places it pays a little more, others it is just for bragging rights. As for me, I'm happy to be a full, tenured professor.

The indicated hierarchy of degrees is quite sufficient, especially since to achieve each of them requires a lot of time and a certain amount of scientific work. I think that the biggest leap in the hierarchy should be between the position of assistant professor and professor - if an assistant professor works to become a competent and good teacher in a separate lecture course, then the professor should be able to integrate information between different courses and show natural and logical connections between them. If we talk about the scientific title "professor", I think that it should be divided into professor and full professor. The first has a PhD degree, and the second has a D.Sc. Such differentiation shows that a person equally has the qualities of both a teacher and a scientist.

It is a way of creating more hurdles which does not translate to any improved value. There are better ways of encouragement in teaching services.

There are Jubilee professors, too. We have a system in which every year there are four professors from other universities visiting for three Months, in order to interact with the present scientists at the hosting department, with the expressed wish to ensure an increase in international contacts between the universities. It is a real success.

Unfortunately, a science degree is not always a guarantee of a person's ability to teach. There are professors who are worse teachers than their assistants. Teaching is an art and different from scientific skills.

Indeed, Neli Vasileva - there are many examples of both: bad researcher + good educator, and bad educator + good researcher.

But more and more I find that both educators and scientists around me by and large are better researchers and teachers, and have a broader mind, these days. We used to have positions that were solely teaching-based, and positions that were solely research-based, and I find that the ideal is the average of the two, so to speak.

In academia, we have positions such as Deputy Deans, and Deans among other duties the do, they are central in encouragement and motivating people to achieve their goals and encourage mentors and head of departments on this component. At the university level, we have Pro-Vice Chancellors, again part of their roles depending on their areas is motivation, creativity, research etc.

We also have such positions, and I think that while they look odd with all their regalia, they do have important positions, especially in creating and maintaining academic contacts around the world, with local and global industry, and with the municipality.
