The researcher gets one or more invitations to attend a conference or workshop around the world in strict or general jurisdiction. Is it necessary to attend even once a year? What do you think?
Yes. New innovations in the field are presented in their originality and new line of research and methods are exposed. Also chances to meet and ask questions are made available. It may not be necessary but it is important.
For young researchers, attending of at least 2- 3 conferences (preferably international conferences), may be made compulsory before deposition of Ph D thesis as per my idea.
It depends on you, the most of conferences are platform to share the new and cutting edge scientific finding. I think they are absolutely beneficial to attend.
There are two types of international confs including business and academic confs. The business confs are organized by private NGOs or organizations and their certificate cannot be considered for scholarship process. These types of confs have wide range of titles or subtitles to receive papers from authors to increase their income after sending acceptance for authors. Generally, business confs are widely distributed in many countries throughout the world to attract tourists to their country. On the other hand, academic confs only focused on very specific issues and such meetings only organized by Universities or related organizations. These confs help you to meet famous scientists to discuss about the titled topics. In these confs you can also seek for international scholarships to continue your education in another country. Summing up; as my colleagues stated their point of views, international confs help you to meet other researchers to share your experiences. But to select a target conf to present your paper you should check its structure (academic or business).
The participation in international scientific conferences is a necessity for exchanging experiences and opinions, an opportunity to start scientific cooperation and meet with those with strict specialization, in addition to changing tourism and seeing the features of the host country of the conference.
International conference attendance gives researchers a package of academic training, research collaborations and cultural funfair. My writing, oral and research skills as well as the rich research collaborations with other experts in foreign lands were as a result of the numerous academic conferences I attended. Many were self-financed but it was worth the sacrifice.
Absolutely, yes. You make contacts with peers in your field. You may even get an opportuntiy to interview if you are looking for employment. You may meet potential professors supporting post-doc research. The possibilities are endless. This is in addition to stuff you learn at conferences as well as demos and prototypes you get to see before they are released
Yes, this thing is certain ... because through conferences, scientific and practical relations are created, economic and social, and consist of scientific networks, research groups and an exchange of experience and information. Often, when a student graduates and enters the labor market, he is away from scientific research and its latest developments. During the conference, he will learn about the research in the university laboratories and develop his performance in his work. The scientist and the researcher at the university will identify the practical problems and what is needed in the field. A positive movement begins between the parties.
The scientists work on their research and work silently, making the outside society not know about them and their scientific activities much. Through conferences, they try to arrange and prepare presentations that show these activities. The audience sees them and the media show them to the public. The society learns about its universities and its scientists, and its science, culture and light spread in society.
I fully agree with the above statements. For me personally, being a participant at the conference is a natural way of improving my scientific work in future. Besides, such an activity is on the list of obligatory things a reasercher in Poland must do if she or he thinks about keeping the position at the university and developing the scientific career.
Absolutely! An international conference provides global exposure to researchers related to global trends in research as well as particular in his/her research areas.
In my point of view, there benefit from any kind of Workshop/conference/CME/Seminar is totally dependent on nature and quality of resource persons, not at the conference.
I wouldn't use my money to pay for a conference. I don't think it's really worth it. I attended several conferences and the only thing I gained from them was a mounting debt and a renewed dose of inferiority complex. I'm probably not cut for that hype.
When I was a graduate I was told to attend scientific conferences because they will help me to build my network, learn new developments in my discipline, etc. I first attended an international conference in 2013 and I never collaborated or exchanged emails with a person I met at a conference. I tried giving my business card and even emailing speakers.
I thinking attending conference is an unnecessary burden imposed on early career researchers. I don't advice people to attend conferences because I haven't seen their benefit. For that reason, I only attend conferences when I'm fully funded (transport, accommodation and food).
Rebecca Bodenheimer shares challenges of attending a conference when you're an independent researcher: https://www.insidehighered.com/advice/2017/08/29/difficulties-and-frustrations-attending-academic-conference-independent-scholar
I share challenges of attending a conference when you're from an unknown institution:
I completely disagree with your views here. Most top researchers in world will agree with me that via conference participation (especially quality ones e.g IEEE, ACM-Scopus indexed, etc) their entire academic horizon got transformed.
Professional development conferences/symposiums/workshops as highlighted above gives you the opportunity to learn more about the field/discipline you work in OK. In fact, Conference participation allow you to engage in topics/innovations that you may not have personally researched. With various parallel sessions having distinguished /exceptional keynote speakers, delegates usually have the opportunity to learn from inspirational experts about current/trending issues that will broaden intellectual scope.
A good conference offers you excellent opportunity to network with other people in domain/ field, thus allowing you to tightly integrate into your professional community. In most cases, you can have connections/contacts that could included you in journal/conference editorial review teams/board, invited as a speaker/keynote speaker, or even be assigned the role of an examiner in various institutions. Assuming you are quiet good in your field.
Attending a conference may give you the opportunity to learn about a new place or culture – especially if the conference is taking place in a country or city that is culturally different from your own.
However, I must advise that these benefits only comes with consistent participation as well as volunteering. Always select sessions/conference that will most benefit you or your institution. If you are looking at developing a new skill for your job or to learn about a different area of your field, always lookout for conferences/sessions with expert speakers that could provoke insights and offer you the needed help. Pay and Attend!
Please always consider a conference as a chance to meet new people, expand your professional network and learn what other people in your field are doing.
Finally, try to think of a conference as a small part of advancing the ultimate goal of your organization o your destiny. For me, through conference participation, i have built great networks for research collaboration in Africa and around the globe. I have attracted numerous privileges to my department, institution and my country at large. I learnt numerous skills that now assist me as a keynote speaker in major conferences around the globe. My conference connections has widen my academic horizon. Through most conference platforms, i obtained links/opportunities to serve in respected editorial boards; mentor postgraduate students beyond Africa and as well as gain insights to Fellowships, scholarships, grants, and so many other benefits.
I hereby advise you to take conference participation very seriously if you want to be global expert in your field. In fact, your race, color, background does not matter as long as you have the capacity to solve societal problems. As a Technology expert in Africa, I have gained so much benefits from conference participation and this applies to so many others too.
Of course. Attending conferences is very important to every researcher as it gives the opportunity to share views, experience, and ideas with a lot of people who come from different educational institutions and different educational backgrounds.
nowadays there are many conferences that i can say are fake, as organizers only invite one or two famous researchers to attrract young researchers and make money out of the conference!
So one needs to know the important conferences in his/her field of science. In each field there are very few valid, valuable and worth spending money conferences.
With situation of science funds, one really needs to think and consider everything before attending a conference.
Otherwise its very useful to meet and connect with other scientists, to practice presenting specially oral presentations, to participate in team activities during conferences, to discuss local issues with internationally well known experts of the field ....
