Well, in most cases statistics do help in research. But in the field of clinical research, it is said that statistical significance does not always tally with clinical significance.
To judge clinical significance, one needs to consider the 95% confidence interval. Statistical significance asks whether the confidence interval excludes the null value. In contrast,
clinical significance asks whether any of the values in the confidence interval are big enough to care about.
For example, if the true difference between two treatment groups is so small that it is clinically irrelevant, a huge sample size can be found for which this difference is statistically significant. On the other hand, if the difference between treatment groups is statistically non-significant, it may still be clinically important.
