According to the IPCC, "Attribution of desertification to drivers is challenging, due to (lack of) robustness of several methodologies (linked to focus on short periods, lack of data / inconsistencies in datasets etc.)"
In my opinion, war wether military or economic, by its direct and indirect chain of consequences is more efficient in causing desertification, deforestation and urban heat too! This is not particularly the prime responsibility of the most populated countries of the world. The same could be said about the climat change.
I agree with Drs. Twoe and Najeeb. I guess human activities are more danger and cause a lots of environmental disastor rather "climate change" do. Besides i don't beleive there is climate change . Our nature acts well with any change or disturbance of climate. In my openion it is just weather change from time to time based on many local and regional factors. This weather change is done by nature to calibrate again the conditions to its natural form.
Climate change is a natural phenomenon that it occurred during geological different period’s especially in the Quaternary period (we can see signs both glacial and pluvial periods) but human activities can intensify climate change via increasing concentration of greenhouse gases etc.
Desertification formed by unsuitable human activities, so don’t exist a term as “natural desertification”, but there is a term as “desert” which it formed due to natural hard conditions.
Carbon dioxide-induced climate change and desertification remain inextricably linked because of feedbacks between land degradation and precipitation. Water resources are inextricably linked with climate. Annual average river runoff and water availability are projected to increase by 10-40% at high latitudes and in some wet tropical areas, and decrease by 10-30% over some dry regions atmid-latitudes and in the dry tropics. Soils exposed to degradation as a result of poor land management could become infertile as a result of climate change. So in this way , there is a relation between desertification and climate change . for more details you can visit following link
The question is ".... any relation between desertification and climate change?"
Desertification, generally, refers to land degradation (in dry lands) of an area/region. It occurs primarily due to the human activities like over-cultivation, over-grazing, deforestation, and poor irrigation practices etc.
Now the relation with climate change - I think the relation (secondary) is possibly vice versa , means i) climate change influence desertification - e.g. droughts or heavy rains due to climate change, and ii) desertification influence climate - e.g. comparatively cold (the area of desertification) with respect to surrounding regions.
“Desertification, generally, refers to land degradation (in dry lands) of an area/region….”
In reply to your comment (above line): Desertification occurs in different climatic regions. According to UNEP (1990) desertification is land degradation in arid, semi-arid and sub-humid arid regions by human activities.
“…desertification influence climate - e.g. comparatively cold (the area of desertification) with respect to surrounding regions.”
I don’t know this part of your comment (previous line), please explain more detail.
The classification (UNEP 1990), you referred is certainly correct. The terms arid, semi-arid and sub-humid arid regions - collectively may be called 'dry land'. This classification is done based on the two parameters - bioclimatic aridity and temperature regime. You can see the attachment - ' dry land' is used for the said different (dry) lands.
2nd question - Once I had read a report titled " Desertification and climate change in the Mediterranean'.I searched this one for you. See page 4 (desertification may help to cool the Earth’s surface and can lead to fewer rain-showers). It is an interesting point though it needs detailed investigation.
Please read the attached publication - a good work on 'Global semi-arid climate change .........' - may be useful for you.
I have no comment on your comment. This is my respect to an eminent researcher on climate. We have learned lot from your explanations particularly related to my question - https://www.researchgate.net/post/Climate_change_or_global_warming-Is_it_only_due_to_anthropogenic_activities
climatic changes, particullarly in arid to semi arid regions caused decreased precipitation, increased salinity and soil erosion and degredation of land production. Recurrent draught years caused habitats degradation, loss in wild species, and serious threat to biodiversity.
Proposed initiative will break down these vicious cycles by using subsurface water to provide and irrigate hotspots and habitats in which important species live.
