from a research done yesterday by me, it came out that for 1 car to operate for 1 year, 2.373 billion liter of CO2 is produced, and it takes 110.664 thousand fully grown trees. Shocking to see that 3.5 to 7 billion trees are cut down each year... Now is Afforestation a solution?
Yes. "One of the measures" suggested to tackle the effect of Global Warming is afforestation. However afforestation should be done through global participation, if we have to address the issue of global warming.
Afforestation is really very important to stabilize the conditions of recent climate. Not only afforestation but also, reforestation of degraded lands including, marshy area, sand dunes, mining areas also need to be practiced. Afforestation requires lots of lands, but because of increasing population, we can hardly spare land for afforestation program. but the reforestation of degraded lands and making our reserved forests healthier can help us in maintain the climatic conditions to normal. Social forestry can also be employed in different areas which eventually helps to combat the cities population.
I totally agree with Dr. Salman. We should give more stress on re-forestation and regenerate our lost forests for long term benefits and along with this afforestation activity should also continue.
Afforestation is only part of the answer as long as it doesn't compete for land for food production, and once land available for forestry runs out and forests reach their maximum carbon density, there is no more mitigation potential.
I would say afforestaion and reforresation is only a cost effective mesaures in comprison to costlty clean technology but where land is contrsints mainly densely populated country as well agriculture land is main stay for people , agroforestry can play an important role. Trees on farm bunds or some other kind of arrngements without impacting the crop yield can best alternative. Integarted farming with fruit trees, plantion crops and timber trees can be tragetd. Other option to incrase the stocking of natural forests like in India only 10 % forests area ( dense forests) in having more than 40% canpoy desity other 90 % area has scope to increase forest cover to optimum level.
Although afforestation could be used as a measure to address climate change in terms of sucking up part of atmospheric carbon dioxide, it may not be a short term solution for "global warming". Worded differently, afforestation may be used to address short term anthropogenic carbon dioxide sequestration ONLY, and may not be a stopgap solution for removing other greenhouse gases.
In a word, no. Think of it as a time issue; trees took millions of years to suck C out of the atmosphere and deposit it as fossil fuel. We have blasted through perhaps half of fossil C in just over a century and now we're trying to use (a much, much smaller because of deforestation) area of forests to remove the extra C from the atmosphere. So afforestation will help, but it is not the solution.
It certainly is a good solution, particularly in countries like India, where it is more of rejuvenation of degraded lands that were once forests and part of the sustainable eco-system.

According to me, afforestation can be considered as one of the solution to global warming.
I believe that global warming can not be solved by reforestation alone. Other human actions are needed, such as reducing the use of fossil fuels and chemical fertilizers.
In addition, depending on the objectives of the reforestation, the carbon and other elements stored in the wood can return to the atmosphere after the burning of charcoal and firewood. Another fact is that forests capture a large amount of carbon in their growth phase, when they reach a more advanced stage this process is reduced, through physiological processes and the decomposition of organic matter in forests, carbon returns to its cycle.
When we talk on afforestation we need to arise the issue of which species will be introduced. Since there are plenty of examples where afforestation with high water intensive trees may produce the opposite effect than expected. Socio-ecological carefull studies are needed in every case.
Afforestation is one of the solutions to global warming and it's very crucial in purifying the environment and helps in reducing the carbon dioxide level (can also contributes too).

Reforestation is a good alternative for minimizing the effects of global warming as it helps in the sequestration of air pollutants. However, it is important to consider the implementation of cleaner production policics, which aim at reducing the emission of pollutants.
The reforestation is a corrective measure, but the most important to perhaps minimize the maximum possible are the preventive measures.
I think tackling global warming is almost impossible.

In my opinion, due to the need to quickly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and counteract the progressing global warming process, it is necessary to develop afforestation programs for civilization degraded areas, increasing green areas in urban agglomerations, rebuilding cut forests, afforestation of post-agricultural areas with sterile soil, etc.
