I don't believe so. After awarding degree of Master, one need not to read in formal format. One received the degree of Master, mean one have mastery over that subject. What ever knowledge improvement is required that should be decided by research advisory board, accordingly Ph D scholars should be sent different institutions as per need of the research for training or other mode of knowledge, research acumen improvement. I think, it is the best model for Improving the Ph D research genuinely
Yes. Course work is essential part in PhD programme. Course work is essential as clear theoretical explanation of concepts makes practical part more easier and understanding as well. Some minor and supporting courses also aid for better presentation and research work.
Last line of your comment is quite relevant. Exactly, course work should be made scientifically. It is not happening at all. Our research work is nothing but copy & paste. Lackadaisical attitude of supervisor/ research guide. Ph.D. student will read again some courses those are nothing but copy & paste of master degree from different disciplines. They will read another two years (maximum), then, they will do some copy & paste in the name of research for next one year. And get the degree. Great scientists of India, those are no more today, they did not go with course work in Ph.D. Now, we are trying to make our research work "MORE STRUCTURAL" . In structural format, a factory can produce more goods. But university can not yield good research/innovation and also good scientists for future path breaking research.
I think its should be part of it but the course evaluation should not be based on exams. PhD course work should be evaluated in terms of relevance to research.
I am a living witness to this course work component. I moved from Archaeology to African studies at the university of Ghana and the one year course work really helped me in building a foundation for the thesis writing.Secondly, I had left school for over six years so the course work really help me to gather momentum for the rest of the years.
First, you should answer this question: Would you like to become a researcher in future or a teacher?! Definitely, taking a few useless courses and passing them with good marks is not the aim of any PhD programs. However, we see such a thing in most universities.
I think the most important thing in PhD is the thesis that you are working on. In the course-based PhD programs, usually the objectives of PhD theses are less and they spend less time on it. The students suppose that they are Doctor after passing courses and qualifying exam!! While in research-based PhD programs the quality of theses (which is the product of PhD) as well as publications are usually higher.
(I am talking about general cases not about exceptions!)
By the way, if somebody likes to become instructor should pass course in PhD.
PhD programs shouldn't focus on coursework to the detriment of other approaches. Even so, this must not be construed as license to do away with coursework altogether.
I think course work is essential to a PhD program esspecially for those going into a PhD in a field not related to their first degree. The course work helps open your mind to alternative research options while also helping students develope foundation knowledge required to pursue their research.
Coursework at the PhD level should not be compulsory it Should be optional for those who think they need certain information from their courses they opt for. It makes you waste a full year following courses that may not contribute anything to your research
I honestly believe course work is essential for a PhD student if there is a diversion from his/her primary research field; However, I seems not to see the need if the student furthers in his field.
Yes course work is essential in Pakistan as well as in China and other countries. But it varies from country to country in terms of total credit hours and other requirements.
İ think course work is important, it prepares the mind of the student for the research ahead, and mostly because some students start their PhD programs years after their masters program.
Really, it is expected that doctoral students should have had a good background in the subject areas of interest especially during masters programme. However, coursework will open up some areas that have not been dealt with. PhD is to make a candidate go deeper in the chosen area. So, coursework is necessary and needs not be remove from PhD programme
Actually, course work is essential for Ph.D. students and supervisors should help them to choose the topics courses related and useful to serve their thesis .
