While there are so many books and papers on the concept of "whiteness," I have trouble finding scholars who wrote specifically on whiteness (its preservation or destabilization) and (urban) space. How does (urban) space contribute (or not) to the preservation of whiteness and white privilege? To what extent has the protection/defense of white space contributed to the formation of the American character (I'm thinking about rural farmers and vigilante groups protecting their land against menacing, often radicalized "others" in the Republic's early years). I have already read Cheryl Harris's excellent essay Whiteness as Property. I now need to read a book/paper that addresses specifically whiteness and space (private property, land, urban space if possible).

I think the following source might not answer your question directly, but it encompasses the topics of gentrification, race and racialized discourses in Chicago, and how these last contributes to reinforce whiteness privilege and fear.
Sorry, I don't know your work but I saw this post. You might want to check out Rachel Brahinsky's work. She writes in that area. Also, I wrote a little book a few years ago that can be downloaded for free; it is called Austin Restricted: https://repositories.lib.utexas.edu/handle/2152/21232 It takes up the issue of whiteness as you are thinking about and looks at how racial covenants were used as private market means to segregated partially white people in the 1930s. The report might be of interest and so might the citations.

I do not know enough researcher on this issue, but there is an imminent sociologist who worked on the issue of margins by including enough interressente study between the black American ghetto and the French Red suburbs. L.Wacquant Berkley. He did a lot of work in the US context: "Urban outcasts" Bodies -Commodifying-Punishing the Poor ... etc
