In former soviet union countries 0.1 M NaOH is widely used to determine labile humic substances. But I have found only few articles about its usage in another countries. Is this method known?
Here is a paper on just that subject that we did using radiolabelled leaf litter. The 0.1 M NaOH dissolves a mixture of both labile and refractory organic matter. If you precipitate the humic acid and measure the carbon in that fraction, it would give you the most refractory fraction. The NaOH insoluble residue is likely to be the most labile. The fulvic acid fraction would be intermediate.
