I also found such book: "Spatializing Literacy Research and Practice", edited by Kevin M. Leander, Margaret Sheehy, 2004, Peter Lung Publ. But I cannot access its text to tell how relevant it is to your question.

However, at one conference on teaching I heard a report about decline of geographical knowledge and even the preparation of professors in geography, at least in EU. If you are interested in content area literacy, my first go to resource would be this authoritative book titled Developing Readers and Writers in the Academic Disciplines by Doug Buehl. You can find the why, the what, and the how in very simple terms. It is a truly remarkable book you can find  at Amazon. Dough Buehl's research papers in the field would help a lot, too, in case you cannot access the book. Content area literacy is what the author dedicates his professional life to. I hope this helps.
