As a student, you can use the Intel Fortran Compiler (ifort) for free (and ifort definitely works in Abaqus). If you want to use gfortran in windows, you have to install MinGW. But I'm not sure, if gfortran works in Abaqus.

Hi Christoph, I'd tried to have the student version of Intel Fortran, but they offered a cheep but not free option. In addition, I installed MinGW but I couldn't link it to Abaqus. If you have any link to download a free student version of ifor, I'll be very thankful.

Hi Luis, you can have some other options on Linux (but they don't even work correctly), but not on Windows. I spend (lost?) few months trying to find THE one, but I've got nothing... Good luck!

You are right, the free intel student license only includes C++-tools, the ifort compiler is included in the Intel Software Development Suite Student Edition, which costs some money. However, there is a trial-version (free for 30 days): http://software.intel.com/en-us/Intel-composer-xe-evaluation-options/

To use the gfortran compiler with Abaqus, you have to edit the "abaqus_v6.env" file and enter the right compiler and compiler options. However, I'm not sure if gfortran and Abaqus are compatible.

For windows you must use Intel Fortran Compiler 10 or 11 (for what I know) and Visual Studio 2008 Pro. You also need to link fortran to abaqus.

Maybe You could use a free tool named Edi 3.1. It is a polish project made by Wojciech Sobieski. Edi is a comprehensive tool for programming in Fortran. It's using free compilers, distributed under the GPL: g77, g95 and gfortran and several free libraries, including: DISLIN (graphics library) and Slatec (a library for mathematical calculations). The whole has been combined with a compact application development environment by Edi.

Hi Luis, I did a clean install of my Abaqus v6.10-1 this week and since I have access to the new Visual Studio 2012, I had to do several changes to the Fortran Compiler, since it was only compatible with the Studio 2008 as mentioned by Miguel Serra. Try the 30 day trial of the Intel Fortran Compiler, because I tried several other compilers and I wasn't able to integrate with Abaqus. In any case, If you don't want to search for files to integrate with abaqus I recommend you to install the softwares for the following order:

1st. Visual Studio (there is several universities with acess to this as student version)

2nd. Intel Fortran

3rd. Abaqus

If you don't want to do a clean install you have to search for the files mentioned by Henning Stutz in order to integrate the compiler with Abaqus.

You can use the trial-version (free for 30 days). If it expire, uninstall this program then install other trial-version and use normal.

Intel Fortran is compatible with ABAQUS. I did write VMAT material subroutine and attached to ABAQUS and then I compliedd it using FORTRAN. However I couldn't remember which version was that. I will check and come back to you

 I want to use fortran with MSC Marc. Do you have any experience to use Force with Marc. As I know Marc and Abaqus are quite the same.

I have been trying for the last two weeks to install Fortan. I tried Visual Studio 2008, 2010, 2015 and 2017 with Intel Fortan Compiler 2011 and 2013.... and it's not working. I'm using Windows 10 - 64bit.
