I would also advise to polish finely your disks, xdate them  and to a 2nd study on growth-climate associations (this could be really interesting if your species have been little explored by dendroecologists). Good luck

I agree with Camarero about the CDendro and CooRecorder.  They are relatively cheap, and there is a free trial version for testing before buying.

I usually have the same problem, so i do the measurements in a free software like Image J after the quality control of the growth rings, and the correlations in the dendro tools (like cofecha, arstan, etc.), which are free and well accepted by the scientific reviewers.

If you need some help in the process, please, do not hesitate in ask. Our colleague Camarero also has some nice tips.

I concur with above. CDendro and CooRecorder are excellent. In fact, with the cheap price of the software suite, is likely much better than the much more expensive WinDendro suite. You do not even need to use COFECHA as Cdendro undertakes similar crossdating validation plus much more. Good Luck. Rob.

To measure tree-ring width you need not only software but also something that actually capture the dimension of the ring. Basically you have two choices: measuring table (lintab or others) or scanner/digital camera. All software demands one of another. Measuring table has undeniable advantages but is expansive and dedicated to one-man station. I am glad I am not the first recommending CDendro. This is very good tool and as it was mentioned pretty cheap. The imageJ is completely free but offers you much lower accuracy and fewer options to deal with usual troubles as cracks in the wood etc. For both CDendro and ImageJ you need scanner or digital camera. The scanner is better in terms of precision but the latter is sometimes more convenient, especially in case of big samples. You can use the ordinary scanner with resolution 1200DPI. Just remember to prepare samples in proper way (sand them well enough) and keep binocular beside your computer. It is pretty often that wedging rings, false rings or other things must be verified by direct inspection of wood. There is also third way. You can ask your colleagues from Teheran for help. You have some very experienced dendrochtonologist in Iran.

Hi, I don't think there is a free dendrochronological software availabe in the internet, botg CDendro and CooRecorder are cheap, but if this fails I would suggest you to use ImageJ and scanned images. It will take some time to measure things, but it can be done. Recently I came across a version of Tree-ring recognition programme written in R (as a package called measuRing) and this one is free. If everything fails, maybe you might want to come to our lab and measure things.

Hi Peter, I looked at your link, and it looks rally promissing, in particular sinc it is a freely available plugin for Image J. Will test it and see what it delivers.

You just measure the ring-width by live measurement or interactive measurement software or even by scale also and put the value in excel sheet then run  suitable program of freely avialable software DPL and convert it into dacadal basis and then run COFECHA program. In this way You can proceed for dendrochronological research. In my knowledge there is no any free software avialable on internet  that can measure ring-width from scanned images.

I wrote and published a small macro that combines Excel, SigmaScan and if you want R for tree ring analysis (Hietz, P. 2011. A simple program to measure and analyse tree rings using Excel, R and SigmaScan. Dendrochronologia 29:245-250 - let me know if you want a copy). This was developed for difficult-to-identify tropical tree rings where we want to compare several cores at once. You can mark rings by hand and there are some automatted calculations, though you'd later export the data for more statistics (which one could also do in R). SigmaScan is an old and decent image analysis software. I believe you can by now find free versions, but the snag is that it is no longer updated and extremely slow with newer (beyond XP) Windows versions. It should not be difficult to do something similar in ImageJ. A rather new plugin for ImageJ (http://www.plant-image-analysis.org/software/objectj) should be useful to do raw ring-width measurements, but I have not used it yet

Did the problem be resolved now? We want to analyze some log disks and cores to get annual growth of individual trees using a free dendrochronology software.

I recommend CooRecorder and CDendro (https://www.cybis.se/forfun/dendro/). Low-cost (68$) but very powerful software to measure ring widths and other parameters from digital images. Highly regarded for a comprehensive toolbox in educational and professional uses. The solution has been already mentioned by Jesús Julio Camarero
