How do you evaluate the problem-based learning (PBL) tutors? Do you, in your school, ask students to assess their PBL tutors using a standardised form? Or your school prefer not to use this type of evaluation? If you not, what other assessment do you have in your school to evaluate the performance of PBL tutors?
I beg your pardon for restricting my answer to 3rd world universities because these have real problems with regard to evaluation of their academic staff.
First of all, administrators at such universities propagate a "false" image of "excellent" research center. If you dig deeper, you will find "excellence" in faking research. Such deception results in ignoring & underestimating the value of teaching because there are no incentives that encourage "good" teaching but efforts are focused upon collecting points for promotion from "research publications".
I bet that many scholars ,at 3rd world universities, do not know what is meant by a teaching method that is called problem-based learning (PBL) or indeed other types of student-centered pedagogy.
A question may arise to how such institutions assess their staff. There is a mechanism that is almost non-scientific which relies upon "achievements ?!" in research with favoritism "nepotism, cronyism, and patronage" ruling the scenery.
In the university where I work, undergraduate students receiving tutorial help should fill out a Satisfaction Report (SR) for assessing the efficacy of the help received and the proficiency of the tutor providing the help.
In my home country, education assessment and evaluation processes generally include students opinion. This applies to all tutors and teachers.
In a lecture based learning universities, the official evaluation system cannot be easily tailored to PBL, so instructors need to establish their own evaluation questionnaire but it will not be official.
