Alpinia galanga rhizome juice is generally taken as contraceptive by the ethnic group of Manipur, Northeast India.

Trigonella foenum-graecum has showed anti-fertility activity when tested in female rabbits,Andrographis paniculata leaf oral administration for 60 days has shown antifertility activity in male and female rats, Isolated compounds like Embellin, Rutin Sitosterols also have shown anti-fertility activity.

There are references in Classical Ayurvedic references as contraceptive , institutes have worked on reverse pharmacology of some herbs, I feel still there is lot of scope in this field , also there is a great commercial importance if the product developed from this really acts. will you work on pharmacology of the selected herbs and also on the chemistry of those.

Plumbago zeylanica root is a good source.

Please check this paper that has reported number of such plants from boreal forest of Canada. The information is available in additional files not in main text of the paper.

I am not sure that, Ganesh Muguli, you asked me a question, but, in case : no, I don't want to make fine chemical analyses for now. I firstly want to discover how people could use contraceptive plants without "chemical knowledge". And I would like to know more about works that have already been done before making my own about chemistry of these plants.

Since the paper I mentioned is about boreal forest plants I am sure you can find many plants common also in European boreal forest. And at least few out side boreal forest in Europe.

I think I am not following discussion. It was me who posted the paper and database of medicinal plants of boreal forest of Canada. I don't see anyone i this forum who said there is boreal forest in France. Not necessarily important to have boreal forest to find some common species that are found in boreal forest of North America. Some of the plants that are reported in this study (boreal medicinal plants of Canada) are even available in India and Nepal!!!

The seed extracts of Solanum torvum plant is high quality contraceptive properties,according to the findings of recent research.

In Europe not many but some plants have been used as contraceptives. In the Spainish ethnobotanical litterature plants used as abortives are more common, many of them based on their oxytocic properties, for example Ruta sp.pl., cinnamon, Stipa tenacissima, Petroselinum crispum (probably some of the more widely used) and some more. But to my knowledge not in the basis of having steroid-saponins like Dioscorea sp., the origin for the current oral contraceptives.

Fresh Roots of S. torvum Sw. are used as oral contraceptive in North-Eastern India especially in Arunachal.

Pls find some of the herbs used as contraceptives and their indications:

Cotton Root Bark (Gossypium herbacetum)

Part used: bark of the root, cut and broken up like tea

Properties: emmenagogue, imitates oxytocin (childbirth hormone that triggers labor)

Preparation: decoction,1 teaspoon of bark per cup of water, 3 cups per day for a maximum of 6 days.

use only organically-grown cotton root bark, as cotton plants grown for fabric production are heavily sprayed with pesticides.

Pennyroyal (Mentha pulegium)

Part used: entire plant, broken up, dried

Properties: emmenagogue, aids gall bladder and digestive tract

Preparation: infusion,1 teaspoon per cup of water, 3 cups per day for a maximum of 6 days.

CAUTION:Do Not Use extracted pennyroyal oil, which is toxic and potentially lethal!

Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris)

Part used: entire plant, broken up, dried

Properties: emmenagogue, antispasmodic

Preparation: infusion,1 teaspoon per cup of water, 3 cups per day for a maximum of 6 days.

CAUTION: Do Not Overdose! More than 40g per liter causes hepato-renal disorders and convulsions.

Contra-indications: uterine inflammation, recent pelvic inflamation.

Parsley (Petroselium sativum)

Part used: entire plant, broken up, dried. Do Not Use the seeds.

Properties: cleanser, diuretic, stimulates menstruation

Preparation: decoction,1 teaspoon per cup of water, 3 cups per day for a maximum of 6 days.

CAUTION: Do Not Overdose! Parsley is toxic in high doses. The seeds are even stronger than the plant and should not be used because they are dangerous particularly to the kidneys.

Blue Cohosh (Caulophyllum thalictroides)

Part used: root, cut and broken up like tea

Properties: emmenagogue, imitates oxytocin, antispasmodic, diuretic

Preparation: decoction,1 teaspoon per cup of water, 3 cups per day for a maximum of 6 days.

Black Cohosh (Cimifuga raremosa)

Part used: entire plant incl. root, cut and broken up like tea

Properties: emmenagogue, antispasmodic, diuretic

Preparation: decoction,1 teaspoon per cup of water, 3 cups per day for a maximum of 6 days."

Queen Anne's Lace / Wild Carrot (Daucus carota) is another good one. Seeds being used by women for centuries as a contraceptive.

WIld Yam is also used very often as a herbal contraceptive. Wild yam has many effects on the body, among other things, its very good for the liver and endocrine system, by toning and nourishing the liver it helps to balance hormone production. Wild yam is very well known for its steroidal saponins contained within particularly diosgein, an important hormonal precursor for progesterone. Precursors provide necessary elements or building blocks to produce and balance the hormones progesterone and cortisone.

Silphium, a member of the giant fennel family, was used by ancient women during the seventh century B.C.E. for contraception. A rare plant growing in a narrow 30 mile band along the dry mountain sides facing the Mediterranean Sea in northern Africa near the city of Cyrene, in what is now Libya. Ancient texts recorded its usage as a contraceptive agent, Soranus wrote, women should drink the juice from a small amount of silphium about the size of a chick pea with water once a month. He added that it "not only prevents conception but also destroys anything existing". Another ancient herbalist/physician, Dioscorides, too, gave it for contraceptive and abortive purposes.

Neem (Azadirachta indica) is very widely used in india for these purpose.

Lot of plants have been studied for contraceptive activity there is review article published on the same, all those studies are not studied using a proper contraceptive tablets/capsules which are well recognized by scientific communities, if any studies are done it can be commercialized and also it will have a great demand.

I do remember two Indian medicinal plant Neem and Embelia ribes(studied for Embelin)

Neem,Tulsi, Lathyrus and Cleome are best contraceptive plants. Their leaves possess ample inhibitors of gametogenesis and oogenesis ifor both sexes.

In South Asia and Southeast Asia, unripe papaya (Carica papaya) has traditionally been used to prevent or terminate pregnancy. Unripe papaya contains an enzyme called papain which suppresses the production of progesterone, a hormone critical in healthy pregnancy. The seeds of the papaya could serve as an effective male contraceptive.
