We are currently working on the separation of magnesium sulfate salts using NF90 Nanofiltration membranes. We know that our main problem will be to remove the fouling from this salt for repeated use of the membranes. To solve this problem, we used solution of EDTA 3% wt and solution of EDTA 7%wt that by using ammonia to reach pH = 9 to we can remove membrane fouling, but they were not useful except once. It should be noted that the amount of solutions made was significant. Now, I would like to ask the present people if you have a solution for removing MgSo4 salt fouling on NF90 membrane help and offer us.

In your particular case, as you want to treat fouling with MgSO4 scales, you may follow the procedure recommended by DOW Filmtec membrane provider for cleaning sulfate scales in RO membranes (attached): 0.1% (W) NaOH and 1.0% (W) Na4EDTA, pH 12, 35°C max. You just have to make sure that the recommended pH is within the limits specified by your membrane provider. If there are other inorganic foulants, an alternative procedure consists of an alkaline treatment as above followed by acid cleaning: 0.2% (W) HCI, 25°C and pH 1 - 2. This is recommended according to Filmetec "If the RO system suffers from colloidal, organic fouling or biofouling in combination with calcium carbonate. The acid cleaning may be performed when the alkaline cleaning has effectively removed the organic fouling, colloidal fouling and biofouling".
