I would advise you to try any other method to check the purity of the compound. Out of them chromatography and/or NMR would be my first choices. The reason not to use melting points (m.p.) for checking compounds purity are (but not limited to):

1) You need to have calibrated melting point apparatus and a good reference (at least one of them is missing in your case)

2) Melting points could vary greatly because of small changes, like the solvent you use during the (last) manipulation (some solvents tend to form adducts, co-crystalizes with the compounds or interfere with m.p.). Also crystals with different packings may have different m.p.

3) There is no direct connection between structure and m.p. (so you won't get information on the sample nature if something goes wrong)

To sum up, TLC (as a first choice) seems to be better solution to your problem according to my experience, but in any case, I won't state anything on purity of the compound without reasonable NMR and/or GC or HPLC data in hand.

Correct me if I'm wrong, by TLC, what you meant is for me to check the completion of reaction, right? Can you please explain more about the TLC?  

Dalily: Not only the completion of the reaction but also presence of the impurities (if any are visible/detectable). Also if you have a standard of the product you should use it in a adjacent line so could compare the Rf of the standard and your product...

The literature melting point is reported to be between 170-172C.

Thank you for the suggestion Peter. Unfortunately I have no standard for the product. I ran the compound for impurities using TLC, none are visible.
