It might be objected that a group of free, equal, and rational people operating from behind a veil of ignorance might not necessarily agree on a set of rules to live by. It might also be objected that, even if they would agree, that the truth of the counterfactual of what free, equal, and rational people would decide from behind a veil of ignorance does not place a moral obligation upon us.

Ignorance as an ingredient will not let society create free people of reason/rational people to put foundations of morality and ethics. This is simply because what morally and ethical are limited to what the people know and understand. It is only on things people understand how much that they put values and thereby determine ethics and morality based on those values of limited understanding. When society advances in lifestyle and living complexity spear headed by science, its understanding about the universe in general and life in particular will have scientific bases and all bounding cultural norms will be relaxed and even will find no place. That means there is a possibility of reaching to a society that will be ruled by reason and rational thinking that will lead to habitual ethics or ethics of reason. When things are done rationally, they are fair to all and fairness is a good thing to bring stability and establish a good society.
