From my personal experience in gathering rabbits for breeding research purposes sometimes ago, I observed that indigenous rabbits in my location (Nigeria) do not exist. Rather some of the breeds brought in through immigration and other forces, that became adapted to the environment are now being termed indigenous breeds; making the distinct characteristics that describe the breeds such as coat colour and ear type vary significantly, even within a population. I do not know of other parts of Africa such as Zimbabwe or South Africa where I suspect they could be indigenous because of the climate and environment.
