As the crisis in Catalonia deepens I am wondering what can be done by international academics/concerned citizens? Any ideas?
On the one hand we have seen the 'pro Catalan' statement by Noam Chomsky and a group of US based academics (http://www.ara.cat/2017/09/29/Carta_Academics_Americans.pdf?hash=6ef3fc9870832ae0d5550253b697dbacb970c628 ) standing up for the right to self determination etc.
On the other hand we have a group of European academics, brought up in the shadow of the Balkan wars, essentially supporting the Spanish state (https://www.opendemocracy.net/can-europe-make-it/group-of-social-scientists-working-at-various-universities-and-citizens-in-barcel)
Do you think we can have a third position? Could we not support democratic demands made in Catalonia? What would 'not doing harm' mean in terms of a guide to action?
Should we support the Mayor of Barcelona, a progressive but not a separatist, when she asks for international mediation for example?
