I am wondering an unknown magnetic moment of say [W(H20)6]2+ can be approximated by knowing the magnetic moment of [Cr(H20)6]2+. My intuition tells me that the magnetic moments should be different, since W being two periods lower gives its ligands more space and will more likely form a low spin complex. However a formula which i see often being used is ueff=sqrt(n*(n+2)), which seemingly doesn't account for this difference.
