I treated my cellulosic fiber through the kraft pulping method at a temperature of 170o C. Following the treatment, the crystallinity index decreased while the crystallite size increased. Can anyone assist me in understanding the scientific reasons behind this change?
What form was your biomass in? What was your h-factor, %EA, %S? Likely you are seeing carbohydrate degradation combined with fiber swelling.
I want to mention that I isolated the cellulose from jute fiber using kraft pulping method. I analysed the crystallinity index, initially value was 72-73 % after treatment the value decreased to 70%. Although it seems same. But I am so much curious on this change. But I haven’t found any papers on it. If you know about these characteristic, please suggest me some papers.
I need a little more information. Are you starting with pulp fibers? Or the raw jute? If you are producing pulp fibers (1 mm) - these are too large to measure any significant difference in crystallinity due to Kraft pulping.
I used raw jute fiber with a 10 mm length. and when I measured the XRD, I used these 1/3 mm cellulose fibers (Getting after pulping).
There are a number of factors that influence the calculation of crystallinity. First is the size of the amorphous peak in the x-ray diffraction spectrum. Unfortunately you can't subtract this unless you produce an amorphous specimen. The presence of this peak will impact the others. Are you using the Segal method? Do you use any peak deconvolution methods? Are you controlling the temperature and humidity of the laboratory the XRD is conducted in? How many scans did you conduct? Rate of scan? Did you normalize the peak heights?

I didn't subtract the background of the glass holder. I used the segal method to determine the crystalline index. I have attached the figure of my data for reference.
